Capturing the Flag: speaking up for Democracy
CAPTURING THE FLAG- FILM AND COMMUNITY DISCUSSION
LAUNCH OF THE DEMOCRACY REFORM RANKING PROJECT
Wednesday, December 12th at 7 -9 pm
Cinemapolis, 120 E. Green St. in Ithaca, NY
The film, Capturing the Flag, reveals how a team of voter protection volunteers uncovered striking evidence of voter suppression in North Carolina during the 2016 election - post-partial repeal of the Voting Rights Act.
The short film (1-hour 15-min.) will be followed by a discussion about the importance of different democracy reforms and community announcements from people attending.
This event marks the launch of The Democracy Reform Ranking Project, which is a live tour coupled with a survey tool to engage people about reforms they believe would most improve our democracy. It is a campaign designed to offer an ongoing opportunity for engagement to citizens who are concerned about the direction and effectiveness of representative government.
The DRRP aims to raise awareness and encourage grassroots involvement by offering events, organizing meetings, and real-time ranking assessments, both in-person and online. The meetings will be available via webcast for those unable to attend. The live events are designed to result in increased local organizing and a larger activist network. Meetings will highlight how the local, state, and federal governments work (and don’t) and how citizen engagement can be catalyzed. Initial focus areas will include the right to vote and have that vote well counted, as well as ending voter suppression, gerrymandering, and the influence of undisclosed corporate money in our political system. The goal is to empower participants to work with each other to launch initiatives in their own home communities and grow the DRRP network in order to grow and sustain a movement toward constitutional amendment.
Part of the event proceeds will go to the Multicultural Resource Center.
